Admiralty, Hong Kong
The Area
This area is named admiralty after there was a naval dock and a naval yard. Golden Bell, a direct translation of the Chinese characters for Admiralty is in reference to the Golden Bell that was once housed in the dock yards. Until the 1970’s the area was exclusively used by the British military, who built Wellington Barracks, Murray Barracks, Victoria Barracks and Admiralty Dock at the site. During the reclamation of the harbor, the naval dock was destroyed and later redeveloped as the HTM Tamar naval base northward. A cannon was also found during the reclamation construction, now on display in the Admiralty MTR station. Over the years, the military structures were gradually replaced by commercial buildings and gardens. On the former sites of the Victoria barracks, the current Queensway Plaza with Pacific Place shopping mall, hotels and commercial buidlings now occupy the space. Other major buildings which are connected via the Admiralty MTR underground walkway are the Admiralty Center, the United Center, the Far East Financial Center, the CITIC Tower and Lippo Center Towers. Queensway and Harcourt Road are the major roads in the area. The High Court and the Hong Kong Park are located south of Queensway.
Transportation
Queensway and Harcourt road are the two major arterial roads which connect the East with the West through Central to Causeway Bay. Admiralty serves as a stop along the way and is therefore a very important route for all major forms of transportation. Above ground transportation such as buses, minibuses can be found to direct traffic in all directions, and the MTR line also finds a stop in Admiralty with exits to the following: Admiralty Centre, Lippo Centre, Queensway, United Centre, Harcourt Garden/Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, Pacific Place
Schools
There are no major schools located in the area, but Admiralty falls under the catchment areas of the ESF for Quarry Bay in the Primary sector and the South Island and West Island School for the secondary sector
Leisure, Entertainment, Shopping
The Hong Kong Park offers a respite from the hustle and bustle of the busy streets of Hong Kong. The park is a sanctuary for tropical birds or the Edward Youde Aviary, monkeys and wild cats. The once historic building of the Flagstaff House is now a museum of teahouse, also found in the park. Some of the Victoria Barracks buildings are also preserved, including the current Visual Art Center which was once the Cassels Block. Luxury items can be found in the Pacific Place shopping mall, above which five star hotels and office buildings are also found.
