The Area
Discovery Bay is located on the Northeast shore of Lantau Island and was originally owned by the Hong Kong Resort Co. Ltd. It was originally developed as a public holiday resort and later became the residential complex it is now. In 1982, the first phase came on the market and sold out very quickly. Discovery Bay has since span to include 6.5km2 with two bays, the Tai Pak Wan and the Yi Pak Wan. The population of DB is roughly around 14,300 people, but with further developments, it is expected to reach up to 25,000 people. Most of the residents are expatriates who enjoy the respite away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of Hong Kong. The residential accommodations range from garden houses to high rise towers of around 25 storey. The newest phase, the Chianti went on the market in March 2006 and was well received by the public.
DB is well known for its green surroundings and the 400m man made beach, giving residents an opportunity to walk along the paths of Lantau or enjoy a lazy day on the beach. There are also club houses, a marina club, a yacht club and the recently completed Discovery Bay Plaza with numerous restaurants and bars with a variety of popular cuisines and restaurants. It is a popular place to raise children with many facilities catered to them.
Transportation
Discovery Bay is served by a high-speed catamaran service from the Outlying Ferry Piers in Central on Hong Kong Island. The journey takes about 25 minutes and costs HK$27 for a one way ticket. Private Transportation in DB is unfortunately limited to golf carts which are on hire for $4,000/mo. or bought at $700,000. The majority of residents get around by the public transportation. Shuttle bus, bus and minibus services are convenient and frequent where schedules to and from the pier and to the air port or Tung Chung are very easy.
Schools
There are several schools in Discovery Bay. These are:
Kindergarten – Sun Shine House, Discovery Bay International School Kindergarten, Discovery Mind Kindergarten. Primary School – Discovery Bay International School, SHK Wei Lam Primary School. For Primary to Secondary “through train” school – The private Discovery College (ESF branch).
Leisure, Entertainment, Shopping
Amenities in Discovery bay include;
The Discovery Bay Plaza which is the commercial hub containing the bus terminus, ferry pier, open piazza, shops, supermarkets, specialty shops, medical clinics and vets.
The Discovery Bay Golf Club; 27 demanding holes set on a hill top with commanding views of Hong Kong, Silvermine Bay and Peng Chau Island.
The Residents Club with restaurants, bars, tennis and squash courts, swimming pools, fitness centre and games room.
The Marina Club designed to berth 345 craft; other amenities include bar, restaurant, fitness room, swimming pool.
The Tai Pak Beach: a safe place for swimming and boating.
