The Area
The Happy Valley area is mostly a residential area of Hong Kong, located near the Happy Valley racecourse. In Chinese, it is known as the Yellow River Mud Valley or Wong Nai Chung. It was established by the British army as a barracks, but due to the high prevalence of malarial death, the marshy landscape was converted into a horse racing course. It was also used as a burial ground for the dead, which was high in the days, and for names sake, changed to Happy Valley as a common euphemism. Happy Valley offers a variety of housing options, from high rise to low rise, modern to old. Many expats and Chinese middle-income families reside in the Valley, where convenience and life style are ideal. The Hong Kong Sanitorium, a reputable private hospital is also located here. Causeway Bay is only a 10-15 minute walk away making this a cozy yet very convenient neighborhood to reside in.
Transportation
The tram depot is located here, transporting people to and from the Valley and Central. Many take advantage of the cheap mode of transportation, but others may choose the faster bus and minibus routes. There are no MTR stations here, and the closest one is a 10-15 minute walk to the Causeway Bay station.
Schools
The French International School and Hong Kong Japanese School are found along Tai Hang Road. The district falls under the ESF catchment areas for Bradbury and Quarry Bay primary schools and South Island School for secondary education.
Leisure, Entertainment, Shopping
Several options for international dining area available: There are European, Japanese, Thai and various other cuisines to choose from which are notable and convenient. Since the area is also a residential district, Happy Valley is known to have a comfortable community feel where all needs are catered to. There are fresh food markets, nurseries, flower shops, pet shops and vets, auto mechanics and specialty stores of all kinds. Sports is also very much the theme here, where the race course is used as soccer, field hockey, rugby practicing grounds during the week when it is not used as a race course. The Football club is also a notable sports club where young and experienced sportsmen join an array of competitive sports. The Cricket club is also located in the neighborhood, along with the modern Hong Kong stadium which hosts many international sporting events.
