The Area
Fanling:
Earlier settlers of the Northern districts were farmers. It was a farming settlement for several centuries attributing to the agricultural land of the area. This Northern district town has now grown with a population of 350,000 inhabitants on 14,000 ha. of land. 70% of the population now live in public housing estate in the new owns of Sheung Shui and Fanling. There are 40,000 who also live in the 111 rural villages of Sheung Shui, Fanling, Sha Tau Kok and Ta Kwu Ling where the traditional rural life and agricultural community has been preserved. There is however a good part of the town that has had its rural atmosphere preserved, making it a part of the Lung Yuek Tau Heritage Trail. Many of the heritage buildings along the trail are a part of the Tang clan, one of the five great clans to settle in the new Territories during the 12th century. There are 5 walled villages and 6 villages in the area around Luk Yeuk Tau. There are several monuments that one passes along the trail, including the Tin Hau temple and one of the largest ancestral halls which housed the Tang ancestors built in the 1525.
Fanling is now a part of the Fanling-Sheung Shui New Town, which includes Leun Wo Hui, the market place of Fanling before the urban development in the area. North West of the Fanling is Sheung Shui and Southeast is Tai Po. The enclosed walls and corners which tower Kwun Lung Wai, Lung Yue Tau are several of the declared monuments of the area.
The Northern district and Shenzhen are separated by three border line check points of Lo Wu, Man Kam To and Sha Tau Kok.
Sheung Shui:
Shek Wu Hui was the small market town of Sheung Shui until the 1930’s. It is now the last town before the Hong Kong and Shenzhen border. It has now become a part of the spreading satellite town from Fanling. It is a part of the Fanling-Sheung Shui New Town in the Northern District of the territory. Old Sheung Shui has been lost with the development of new residential developments, it still holds a quiet charm a kin to the village it once was. Sheung Shui Wai dwelled by the Liu clan is a walled village and the ancestral hall of the Liu clan, Liu Man Shek Tong remain as a monument. The Man clan known as merchants and scholars occupied the last Mandarin mansion until the 1980’s and the Tai Fu Tai, built in 1865 are also declared heritage sites for all to visit.
  Currently there are public estates, home ownership scheme courts, private estates and villages. The old buildings were repaired in the 1950’s and other new developments have emerged, giving this town an equally contrasting feel for the old and the new.



Transportation
Both Sheung Shui and Fanling are accessible by the East Rail Line feeding directly into the stations. KMB routes and minibuses are also found terminating in Kowloon.

Schools
Fung Kai No.1 Secondary School near the Sheung Shui Wai is the largest secondary school in Hong Kong. It was developed by the Lin clan and because of its green and ample space, it was used as a scene for local Entertainment Television programs.

Leisure, Entertainment, Shopping
Several shopping centers also exist, such as the Lung Fung Garden, the metropolis plaza, the Sheung Shui center, and the Sheung Shui Town Center and Landark North. Community facilities such as sport centers, the Northern District park and sports ground, the town hall, Shek Wu Hospital, Municipal Service building, the public library and swimming pool, fire station, Jockey club are open to the public.
