The Area
Once an island occupied by fishing villages and boat dwellers, the 10.67km2 area of Tsing Yi Island is located northwest of Hong Kong Island. The area of the Island has been extended drastically with the reclamation of almost all of its natural shores and bays. Residential housing became prominent when the fishing villages were reclaimed for new development and all of the fishermen’s families were relocated into estates. The island is divided into 4 quarters with the northwest area designated for recreational trails, transportation hub and interchange for ship yards, the northeast corner for residential developments, the southeast corner as a container port and the southwest for heavy industrial use. It is therefore unique with multiple uses. There are also two Government run out patient clinics located on the island.
Transportation
The island is serviced by 8 bridges, 2 tunnels (the Cheung Ching Tunnel and Nam Wan Tunnel) and is connected by the Tung Chung line and Airport Express with the Tsing Yi Station.
Schools
There are many government and private school located on the island including 17 primary schools, 8 secondary schools and a technical college.
Leisure, Entertainment, Shopping
Several sites and shopping centers are found on Tsing Yi Island. These include the Tin Hau Temple, Chun Kwan Temple, Tsing Tat Tong tat-more Temple and churches of various kinds. Tsing Yi swimming pool, Tsing Yi Sports Ground, Fung Shee Wo indoor recreation center, Tsing Yi public library, Tsing Yi Park and Tsing Yi Natural trails and promenade all make finding leisure and sporting activities easy on the island. Additionally, shopping centers include the Cheung Fat Shopping Center and the MTR Corporation, Maritime Square.
