Before the massive reclamation, Causeway Bay was a silted bay. The typhoon shelter and the Tin Hau Temple both reveal that the area was a fishing village, until the reclamation began in the 1950’s. The names, Yee Woo street, Jardine’s Bazaar and Jardine’s Crescent give way to the idea that the area was sold by the British Government to the Jardine group. Present day Causeway Bay is well known as a center for shopping. Causeway Bay was once established when four major Japanese Department stores had a strong hold during the 80’s. SOGO department store remains, and along with Time Square, are the two major multi-complex shopping centers where all needs are met.
