Also formally known as a Market Town, Tai Po has entered the Hong Kong Government Phase II redevelopment scheme and is underway with a New Town development which expands over the present day Tai Po Old Market or Tai Po Kau Hui (Tai Po Market/Tai Po Town) and the Tai Wo Town (Tai Wo Market) on the other side of the Lam Tsuen River near the old Tail Po Market Station. Some of the new Town development is taking place on reclaimed lands on the estuaries of Lan Tsuen and Tai Po River. The population of the area is 282-283,000.

The separation of the Industrial and the residential districts during urban planning of the area awarded it Government recognition. The residential areas are known to be quiet with the Tolo Harbor’s serenity.

The area is serviced by Tolo Harbour highway, the KCR East Railway and Tai Po Road.
