IBefore the massive reclamation, Causeway Bay was a silted bay. The typhoon shelter and the Tin Hau Temple both reveal that the area was a fishing village, until the reclamation began in the 1950’s. The names, Yee Woo street, Jardine’s Bazaar and Jardine’s Crescent give way to the idea that the area was sold by the British Government to the Jardine group. Present day Causeway Bay is well known as a center for shopping. Causeway Bay was once established when four major Japanese Department stores had a strong hold during the 80’s. SOGO department store remains, and along with Time Square, are the two major multi-complex shopping centers where all needs are met.
Other smaller centers such as the Lee Garden, World Trade Center, Windsore House, Hang Lung Center, Fashion Island and Fashion Walk are also popular areas catering to the fashionable for a multitude of purposes. The rents in the area, particularly for retail are second most expensive next to Fifth Ave. in NYC. Clothing, electronics, furniture, music and food can all be found here. Prominent hotels in the area are; the Cosmopolitan, the Excelcier, the Regal Hong Kong, Rosedale on the Park and the Metropark Hotels. For those who enjoy being in the midst of the hustle and bustle and the convenience of Causeway Bay, there are many affordable apartments albeit in less than perfect condition, but many residential apartments are also being transformed through renovation or into serviced apartments. Some of the largest multi-national companies have offices in Causeway Bay as a well known alternative to Central. Modern service apartments such as the Jia and Shamas offer alternatives for business travelers or new arrivals to Hong Kong.
