Much of the Island East area has become popular with new residential developments such as La Place de Victoria, Orchards and Grand Promenade. The original developments, both Taikoo Shing and Kornhill are huge residential developments built around the Taikoo Shing MTR Station. Founded on the Taikoo dockyards which moved to the United Dockyards on the western shore of Tsing Yi Island in the late 1970’s, more than 40,000 people make this middle class community their home. Taikoo Shing consists of 61 towers whereby Kornhill comprises 16 blocks. Grand Plaza Hotel occupies a portion of the development along with Uni and Jusco department stores in the vast shopping mall of Cityplaza.　All of this falls under part of the Swire Group Island East residential and retail buildings. Along with the residential developments, office buildings in Taikoo Place are popular with many IT and advertisement based companies.
