From Sheung Wan heading towards the West including Kennedy Town is what is known as Island West. Traditionally an industrial and local residential area, Sheung Wan features many factory and old residential buildings. Yet, with its proximity to Central, this area is transforming into a modern residential district attracting expatriates of all nationalities. The Belcher’s, The Merton, The Elites Place are a few of the developments which are giving Sheung Wan this recognition. Its environment, unlike much of the Mid-Levels, has more open space, greener areas particularly towards Kennedy Town, and has become a focus of new developments in recent years due to the MTR line extension to Kennedy Town due to be completed in 2008.

The area is well served by buses, minibuses and taxis. But minibuses and taxis are a very convenient mode of transportation as they travel through the narrow streets as well as major roads picking and dropping passengers along the way. You can travel all the way from Causeway Bay to the end of Sheung Wan by mini buses in about 30 minutes. It takes about 15 minutes to and from Central.
