INFORMATION ABOUT TUNG CHUNG
Historically Tung Chung is a fishing village, originally called Tung Sai Cheung or East/West. It is called this because when looking onto the ocean, merchant ships could be seen sailing East to the village and West to Macau. Present day Tung Chung was developed as part of the airport core project, Tung Chung is located on Lantau Island and is a growing township on the North West coast of Lantau Island. The first phase of the project was built on reclaimed land to the North, East and Northeast of the original town. The Tung Chung development will take place over four phases resulting in the accommodation of over 250,000 people. The first phase was completed in 1997, the second phase in 2000, the third in 2003 and the fourth is to come. It is primarily developed for residential use, but office and hotels have also been completed. It may seem a distance away, but is only 27 minute from the Central district of Hong Kong via the Tung Chung MTR line. Novotel City Gate Hong Kong, Tung Chung Crescent, Seaview Crescent, Caribbean Coast, Coastal Skyline and a few public housing estates are the main residential developments of the area.
